War on drugs over and dead people get money from govt Empty War on drugs over and dead people get money from govt

I was without PC/internet last 36hours cause my vid card died, and I ended up watching a bunch of news for some reason on the TV.

Saw a few interesting things, thought I'd share.

    First Story:
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009...imulus-checks/
    (full copy/paste)
Thousands of Americans are receiving federal stimulus checks in the mail, this week. Only problem: many of them are deceased.
Recently, a Long Island, New York woman was shocked when she checked the mail and received a letter from the U.S. Treasury -- but it wasn't for her.
Antoniette Santopadre of Valley Stream was expecting a $250 stimulus check. But when her son finally opened it, they saw that the check was made out to her father, Romolo Romonini, who died in Italy 34 years ago.
Romonini was a U.S. citizen when he left for Italy in 1933, but only returned to the U.S. for a seven-month visit in 1969.
The Santopadres are not alone. The Social Security Administration, which sent out 52 million checks, said some of those checks mistakenly went to dead people because the agency had no record of their death. That amounts to between 8,000 and 10,000 checks for millions of dollars.
The feds blame a rushed schedule, because all the checks have to be cut by June. But strangely, some of the checks were made out to people -- like Romonini -- who were never even part of the Social Security system.

    Second Story:
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124225891527617397.html
    (few parts copy/paste)
The Obama administration's new drug czar(Gil Kerlikowske) says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting "a war on drugs," a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use.
The administration also said federal authorities would no longer raid medical-marijuana dispensaries in the 13 states where voters have made medical marijuana legal. Agents had previously done so under federal law, which doesn't provide for any exceptions to its marijuana prohibition.
Mr. Kerlikowske was most recently the police chief in Seattle, a city known for experimenting with drug programs. In 2003, voters there passed an initiative making the enforcement of simple marijuana violations a low priority. The city has long had a needle-exchange program and hosts Hempfest, which draws tens of thousands of hemp and marijuana advocates.

    My Thoughts:
How the govt can send dead people money is beyond me. I can understand if they died with-in last couple mths and their deaths are still being dealt with all the paperwork, but 35 years dead, c'mon.

"War on Drugs" has always been a bad slogan for the modern day US society, just like the new Czar says, it sends the wrong message. There are so many issues with the way to US is handling Class 1 narcotics it's astounding. Prime example being the fact that if you get busted for them, you goto Jail where you can still get them!
